Halowell Reservoir and Cox Cypress Lake are within 33,901-acre Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area, the largest WMA owned by the Game & Fish Commission. Cox Cypress is a natural oxbow of Bayou Meto. Halowell was once part of a private duck hunting club and now serves primarily as a rest area for thousands of wintering ducks. Because of Halowell's rest area status, visitors are not permitted on the lake during much of the fall and winter, so anglers should check open dates before planning a trip. Cox Cypress is open to fishing year-round.
Both lakes offer top-notch angling for bluegills, channel catfish, crappies and largemouth bass, and Halowell also has a healthy population of big redears.
