Blood Knot: Similar to the Surgeons Knot.

  • Put the ends of each line against each other. They should overlap about 6 inches.
  • Count 5 turns around one line with the end of the other, and bring the end back to where it is held between the two lines.
  • Do the same thing around the other line , bringing the end back between the two lines. The two ends should now lie in opposite directions.
  • Make the knot into loops ,making sure that the two ends do not come out of position.
  • Tighten the knot.

Sometimes a difficult knot to accomplish, a blood knot (also referred to a Barrel Knot) is useful when combining sections of a nylon line while also maintaining the lines strength. In fly fishing, this helps to create a section of slowly decreasing length with the fly line hooked to the larger end and hook at the smaller end.

The Barrel Knot is an extremely strong knot when tied properly and should be tied with monofilament close in diameter. Best use is for monofilament should be 10 lbs. and up.
